Oceans Like This
Derived of the last ten years during which Nick van Dijk has become increasingly fascinated with the dimension that lyrics and layers of harmony can lend to a song, the compositions on this CD are inspired from the seas and beaches of New Zealand.
Thanks to the talents and support of some of New Zealand's finest jazz musicians, this is a recording that has a lot of heart.

Biography
It is said that most New Zealanders live within 50 miles of the sea. And certainly growing up in Nelson within easy reach of Rabbit Island, Tahunanui and Kaiteriteri beaches means that Nick van Dijk has been lucky enough to be in the sand and surf as much as the concert hall and practice
room, so it is only natural for him to gain his insipiration from the sea.
Nick van Dijk picked up the trombone at Waimea College, where recordings like Weather Report's Mysterious Traveller, and Miles at the Plugged Nickel, opened his mind to the curious temptations of jazz. Learning the trade at Wellington Polytechnic, gigging in Auckland, and further study
at Netherlands Koninklijk Conservatory, and Banff, Canada, has led to some beautiful musical moments - from playing with international musicians such as Steve Lacy, Mike Nock, Kenny Wheeler, Joe LaBabara, Robin Eubanks, Rufus Reid, Chucho Valdes and Carl Allen, to the Vaughn Roberts Big
Band, pop bands like the Black Seeds and Rhombus, as well as orchestral work, musicals and many recording sessions for radio and TV. The highlight of his career has been been watching the growth of New Zealand's music industry as embodied by many of his former and present students, colleagues
and associates at the New Zealand School of Music. Nick van Dijk is humbled yet inspired to hear them. |
